Classes & Workshops

Sculpture classes

At the Tasmanian Sculpture School in Legana, our classes run in five-week terms, with one three-hour session each week. Term fees are $450, which covers expert tuition and access to basic sculpting tools. Model-based classes also include the cost of the model. Please note that materials are not included, and payment is required before the term begins to secure your place.

Class sizes are kept small (generally 6–10 students) to ensure each person receives individual guidance and support. We welcome students of all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced sculptors, and we run specialised workshops throughout the year tailored to different levels of experience.

We often work with professional artist models and this can vary from class to class. Poses are mostly selected in consultation with the model, so both students and our model have input. We generally run two alternating poses to provide variety and to allow the model a break from holding one position for the duration of a class.

You can choose between two learning styles:

  • Structured development: focused on proportion, form, and sculpting accurately from life, photographs, or existing works.
  • Freeform creativity: a more playful, exploratory approach where you can develop your own style without the pressure of technical precision.

Both paths will help you build solid sculpting fundamentals, and many students go on to finish their work in clay or choose to have pieces cast in bronze, glass, resin, or other materials.

If you are under 18 years old, you will need to be interviewed and have parental approval.

Sculpture workshops

In addition to our regular term classes, we offer a range of workshops throughout the year, featuring guest sculptors or using a variety of different materials.

  • Introduction to Sculpture Techniques. For beginners or those with limited experience. The workshop teaches fundamental sculpting techniques, basics of armatures and instruction on modelling a 3D form using the profiling method. This workshop is designed to provide you with practical skills for creating a sculpture and the confidence to continue with sculpting at home or in a class situation.
  • Advanced Studies. For those with more experience, we have various workshops which sometimes include using artist’s models, such as intensive life study and portraiture over two to five day periods.
  • Mould making. Takes you through the process of making a silicone rubber mould of your sculpture.
  • Introduction to Bronze Casting. Allows you to take one of your sculptures step by step through the bronze process. (Currently unavailable, though there is scope to see your piece at various stages of the bronze process)
  • Miscellaneous workshops and demonstrations. Various workshops and demonstrations will be available such as drawing, exploring different sculpting mediums, carving, relief sculpture, head studies, armatures etc. Guest sculptors also run workshops and do demonstrations. The workshops cater for beginners through to advanced sculptors and will be specified.
